Aims of Ecologically Responsive Moral Education

An adequate account of the aims of moral education must try to incorporate the best interdisciplinary and cross-cultural reflections from the sciences and humanities on the sort of people we are becoming and the world that we are helping to make. Such reflection must compensate for at least four mistakes in contemporary moral education, taking ‘moral education’ here to include formal and informal efforts to selectively encourage moral dispositions. 1.Moral education is confused with moralistic lessons. This style of instruction is inherently undemocratic, ethically misguided, and pedagogically bankrupt. It does not take human or social transformation seriously, but seeks only to perpetuate established mores.
